The following paper describes some of the details of the Three Phase ISM tool:

2005-12-14-01. This paper presents some of the background behind the Three Phase ISM Tool as well as some of the mathematics and numerical techniques.

The following papers were directly used in the construction of this tool:

Clayton (1983). This paper presents the three-phase interstellar medium model used in this tool. We use Eq. (9) and similar equations for the other two phases to relate the concentration of a species in one of the three phases to the average concentration in the interstellar medium.

Clayton (1984). This paper presents the general formalism for chemical evolution used in this tool.

Clayton, Hartmann, and Leising (1993). This paper presents the solutions for the concentrations of species in the interstellar medium used in this tool. In particular, we use Eq. (3a) of this papers for the mass fraction of stable isotopes in the interstellar medium. We numerically integrate Eq. (4) to obtain the mass fraction of a radioactive species in the interstellar medium.
